Kia Tops J.D. Power Initial Quality Study Rankings | Steve Landers Kia

For the second year in a row, Kia has topped J.D. Power’s Initial Quality Study rankings with a whopping five vehicles. The Kia Soul, Forte, Cadenza, Niro and Sorento topped their respective categories and the Cadenza achieved the lowest average number of problems among any other model ranked in the study.

Each year, J.D. Power conducts a US Initial Quality Study (IQS). The purpose of the IQS is to look at the issues new car owners experiences within the first 90 days of ownership by examining a vehicle’s powertrain, body and interior, features and accessories. Findings for the IQS were based on responses from 77,415 lessees and purchasers for 243 2017 model-year vehicles in 26 segments. Study participants identified their vehicle’s defects and design issues after the first 90 days of ownership.

Kia Motors earned this title by improving to 72 problems per 100 vehicles, which makes it the best performance for a car make in the last 20 years of the study.

The 2017 Kia vehicles came first in the following categories: Soul in the Compact Multi-Purpose Vehicle segment, Forte in the Compact Car segment, Cadenza in the Large Car segment, Niro in the Small SUV segment and Sorento in Midsize SUV segment. The 2017 Kia Soul came first in its segment for the third year in a row while the 2017 Cadenza and 2017 Niro, Kia’s newest vehicles, were exceptional performers for their first model year. The 2017 Cadenza earned top honors as the highest-scoring model of any vehicle ranked in the study.

“When Kia beat out the entire industry in last year’s J.D. Power Initial Quality Study many people wondered if we could maintain such a lofty position,” said Michael Sprague, chief operating officer and EVP for Kia Motors America said in a press release. “Today, the answer is loud and clear as Kia owns the top spot for the second straight year with more 2017 segment award winners than any other nameplate. Our back-to-back chart-topping IQS performances reconfirm Kia’s status as today’s world-class auto maker and reflect the exacting standards and craftsmanship our team members instill into every car, crossover and SUV Kia builds.”
